Europe's Record Heatwaves: What Role Does Climate Change Play?

It seems like every summer brings another headline about Europe breaking temperature records.

Cities are issuing heat alerts. Wildfires are spreading across forests and rural communities. Rivers are running low. Tourists are seeking shelter indoors instead of enjoying historic streets and beaches. Hospitals are preparing for a rise in heat-related illnesses, and governments are asking a difficult question: Is this the new normal?


Whenever an extreme weather event occurs, another question quickly follows:

Is climate change responsible?


It's an important question, but the answer isn't as simple as "yes" or "no."


Weather writes the story. Climate shapes the setting.

We've always had heatwaves. Long before climate change became part of everyday conversation, Europe experienced periods of unusually hot weather.

What has changed is the background against which these events now occur.

Imagine you're standing on an escalator that's slowly moving upward. You can still take steps up or down, but your overall position continues to rise. That's a bit like our climate.

Weather naturally moves up and down from day to day and year to year. Climate change is steadily raising the baseline. As a result, when a heatwave arrives today, it often starts from a warmer point than it would have several decades ago.

That means higher peak temperatures, longer-lasting heat, and more records being broken.


So, what does the science say?

Scientists are careful with their words, and for good reason.

They don't usually say that climate change "caused" a particular heatwave. Weather is influenced by many factors, including atmospheric circulation, high-pressure systems, ocean temperatures, and natural climate variability.

But research consistently shows that a warming planet makes extreme heat more likely, more intense, and more persistent.


Think of it like loading a pair of dice.

You can still roll any number, but some outcomes become much more likely than others.

That's what climate change is doing to heatwaves.


Why Europe?

Europe has been warming faster than many other parts of the world.

A combination of changing atmospheric patterns, drier soils, shrinking snow and ice cover, and rising global temperatures means that heat can build more quickly and linger for longer.

Many European cities also experience the urban heat island effect, where buildings, roads, and concrete absorb and trap heat, making cities significantly warmer than surrounding rural areas.

The result is that millions of people are being exposed to temperatures that were once considered exceptional but are becoming increasingly common.


Heat affects far more than our comfort.

When we hear "heatwave," it's easy to picture sunny skies and crowded beaches.

The reality is very different.

Extreme heat places enormous pressure on healthcare systems, particularly for older adults, young children, and those with existing medical conditions.

Farmers worry about crops under heat stress.

Power grids work harder as demand for cooling increases.

Wildfire risks climb dramatically.

Construction workers, delivery drivers, and outdoor labourers face serious health and safety challenges.

Businesses deal with disrupted supply chains, reduced productivity, and rising operational costs.

In other words, heatwaves aren't just environmental events—they're economic and social challenges as well.


What does this mean for businesses?

Climate change is no longer something that only environmental professionals need to think about.

Today, it influences investment decisions, insurance costs, infrastructure planning, supply chains, workforce wellbeing, and long-term business resilience.

Forward-looking companies are beginning to ask different questions.

Not just "How can we reduce emissions?"

But also:

"How resilient are we to a changing climate?"

Those two questions now go hand in hand.


Looking ahead

Whether you're a policymaker, business leader, investor, or simply someone trying to make sense of another unusually hot summer, one thing is becoming increasingly clear.

Climate change isn't replacing natural weather.

It's changing the conditions in which weather happens.

That distinction matters.

Europe's recent heatwaves are another reminder that our climate is changing.
